Dan McCafferty, lead singer and one of the founding members of Scottish hard rock band Nazareth, has died aged 76.
The news was announced on Tuesday (November 8) with a post on social media by McCafferty's bandmate Paul Agnew. No cause was given.
“Dan died at 12:40 today,” bassist Agnew wrote. "This is the saddest announcement I ever had to make.Maryann and the family have lost a wonderful loving husband and father, I have lost my best friend and the world has lost one of the greatest singers who ever lived. Too upset to say anything more at this time."
Nazareth formed in 1968 in Dunfermline, with founders McCafferty and Agnew joined by Manny Charlton on guitar and Darrell Sweet on drums.
Known for his husky, powerful vocals on '70s rock classics such as Broken Down Angel, Hair Of The Dog and Love Hurts, McCafferty sang in Nazareth until 2013, when he was forced to stopped touring due to health issues. He continued to record in the studio, and released his final solo album, 'Last Testament', in 2019.
