Fleetwood Mac Singer-Songwriter Christine McVie Dies Aged 79

Thursday, 01 December 2022 Written by Jon Stickler

Christine McVie has died aged 79.

McVie wrote some of the legendary British-American rock band's biggest hits, including Little Lies, Everywhere, Don't Stop, Say You Love Me and Songbird. She died peacefully at a hospital following a short illness. A statement from her family confirmed the news:

"It is with a heavy heart we are informing you of Christine's death.

"She passed away peacefully at hospital this morning, Wednesday, November 30th 2022, following a short illness.

"She was in the company of her family. We kindly ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this extremely painful time and we would like everyone to keep Christine in their hearts and remember the life of an incredible human being, and revered musician who was loved universally."

Fleetwood Mac formed in London in 1967, originally including Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, Jeremy Spencer, and John McVie. Christine McVie joined in the early 1970s, along with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham. The band has seen many iterations since then, but currently features Fleetwood, John McVie, Nicks, Mike Campbell, and Neil Finn. They've sold over 100 million records worldwide, making them one of the most successful groups ever.

McVie left in 1998, but returned in 2014 after rediscovering her love of performing. She was among eight members of the band who were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1998.

Nicks posted a personal tribute to McVie on social media, describing her as, "my best friend in the whole world." She also revealed that she had not known McVie was ill until Saturday night, and had wanted to visit her in London.

A statement from Fleetwood Mac reads: "There are no words to describe our sadness at the passing of Christine McVie. She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure. She was the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life. We were so lucky to have a life with her. Individually and together, we cherished Christine deeply and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. She will be so very missed."

McVie also had a successful solo career, and released her last album, made as a duo with Lindsey Buckingham (along with contributions from Mick Fleetwood and John McVie), in 2017.
