For Kali Uchis’ third studio album, the Colombian-American R&B singer has delivered a luxurious cocktail of slow jam-soul pop. 'Red Moon in Venus' demonstrates a gorgeous high point in her catalogue, its vintage production providing an elegant background to syrupy singing and raunch. In ancient astrology, the red moon is meant as a portent of doom. In this context, it appears to predict something altogether more erotic.
The big track here is I Wish You Roses, an intoxicating soul song with retro flourishes and gorgeous, temperate singing from Uchis. It washes all over you warmly: “My love’s deep as the ocean / Don’t you drown on me / just know any love I gave you / Is forever yours to keep.” In a pop world defined by profanity, this singer’s old school gentility makes her stand out.
Despite this throwback quality, Uchis has spent the past few years pushing boundaries. Her debut album was squarely in the soul-pop bracket whereas her follow up, the Spanish language ‘Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) ∞’ zeroed in on her Colombian heritage.
It represented her as a crossover artist, which is a dangerous move that can split your audience.
In this context, ‘Red Moon in Venus’ might actually feel generically conservative. It leans into soul and never really kicks at the outer boundaries. That might be a problem were it not such compelling listening. Tracks such as All Mine and the superb Moonlight demonstrate this dynamic nicely.
The latter track—possibly the record’s strongest—is a wah-pedal-bass-led pop track in Spanish and English, with diaphanous blended vocals and more of those luxury flourishes (think wind chimes, think silky strings). It's truly magical at times. Kali Uchis is here to stay.
