The National have shared a new song, Eucalyptus.

Following Tropic Morning News and New Order T-Shirt, it marks the third preview of the American indie giants' upcoming album, 'First Two Pages Of Frankenstein', which is due out on April 28 via 4AD.

Covering familiar anthemic ground, with an enthralling lyrical narrative over a gentle guitar melody and steady drum beat, the song started as an instrumental piece conjured up by guitarist and pianist Bryce Dessner, who sent it to frontman Matt Berninger so long ago that he'd forgotten about it.

Berninger hadn't though, and wrote lyrics to fit the music before asking to play it at the soundcheck for their New York Capitol Theatre show in September 2022. Berninger said:

"We rehearsed it twice without ever having had a demo and played it to the audience that night, and what you hear on the album was partially recorded during that performance. It’s got this raw, immediate feeling, and it made sense to leave the rough edges instead of trying to perfect them."

"Throughout the record there's a lot of looking into the abyss and wondering if a relationship has run its course," he added. "Eucalyptus is about a couple splitting up their possessions after a breakup — like, 'What are we going to do with the spring water we get delivered, what’s going to happen to all these plants?' It’s about all those little things you end up having to think about when you’ve become so connected to someone."

The follow-up to 2019's 'I Am Easy To Find' boasts guest appearances by Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers and Sufjan Stevens. The band will support the it with a summer North American tour, followed by an autumn arena run across Europe and the UK. The latter leg will include stops in Dublin, Leeds, Glasgow and London.
