The powerhouse performer, known around the world as the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll, passed away at home in Switzerland following a long illness, according to the below statement from her representatives:
“Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock’n’Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model."
The multi-award-winner was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and went through a kidney transplant in 2017. Her funeral will be a private affair attended by only close friends and her family, who have asked for privacy at this time.
Anna Mae Bullock, best known to us as Tina Turner, was born in Nutbush, Tennessee in 1939. She has sold in excess of 100 million records worldwide, and is one of the most popular rock, R&B, and soul singers of the century.
With hits like Let’s Stay Together, Proud Mary, Private Dancer, What’s Love Got to Do With It, and her cover of Simply the Best cementing her place in music history (along with a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), Turner retired with an almighty 50th anniversary tour in the late noughties.
Tributes have poured in from not only musicians, but entertainers, organisations and popular figures across the globe, including posts from Gloria Gaynor, Mick Jagger and Beyonce, with the latter posting a message for her "beloved queen" on her website.
I’m so saddened by the passing of my wonderful friend Tina Turner.
She was truly an enormously talented performer and singer. She was inspiring, warm, funny and generous. She helped me so much when I was young and I will never forget her. pic.twitter.com/TkG5VrdxXO
I am so, so very sad to hear of the passing of @TinaTurner, the iconic legend who paved the way for so many women in rock music, black and white. She did with great dignity & success what very few would even have dared to do in her time and in that genre of music 🕊 #TinaTurnerpic.twitter.com/HrcJj7PltI
