Debby Friday has won the 2023 Polaris Music Prize.
Selected by an 11-member jury of journalists and broadcasters, the Toronto electronic artist received the honour for her debut album, 'Good Luck', which arrived back in March via Sub Pop.
Friday fought off competition from an initial longlist of 40 nominated records, which was narrowed to a 10-album shortlist including Alvvays' 'Blue Rev', Feist's 'Multitudes' and Daniel Caesar's 'Never Enough', as well as releases by Aysanabee, Begonia, Dan Mangan, Gayance, The Sadies, and Snotty Nose Rez Kids.
Now in its 18th year, the Polaris Music Prize is awarded annually to the best Canadian album of the year, with the winner scooping a £50,000 cash prize. The event took place at Massey Hall in Toronto.
Last year's award was won by Pierre Kwenders for his album 'José Louis and the Paradox of Love'.
