Dolly Parton has teamed up with former 4 Non Blondes frontwoman Linda Perry for a cover of What's Up?
The updated version stays pretty faithful to the original '90s staple, with the American country music icon putting her own spin on the mix. It'll appear on the singer's first rock-orientated record, 'Rockstar', due out on November 17 via her own Butterfly Records in conjunction with Big Machine Label Group. She said:
"First of all, I love Linda Perry. Second of all, I love this song written by Linda. Third of all, I love being a part of this video to try to make people think about what’s going on in this world today. Shout out to the little children that helped with the video! If our children don’t make it, then what will? Again, I ask What’s Up? Enjoy."
Perry added: "How is one supposed to react when the greatest and most prolific songwriter in the world wants to cover a song YOU wrote? [Dolly's] version of What's Up? is so good. Her spin on it made me feel like it was her song. No surprise there."
Parton has already teased the 21-song project with reworkings of tracks from The Beatles, Queen, and Heart. She has also released the original songs Bygones with Judas Priest's Rob Halford, Mötley Crüe's Nikki Sixx and guitarist John 5, and the record's lead single, World On Fire.
The record also boasts further collaborations with Miley Cyrus, Stevie Nicks, Elton John, Steven Tyler, Debbie Harry and more.
