King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - The Silver Cord (Album Review)

How much synth could a lizard wizard synth if a lizard wizard could play a synth? Well, here’s your answer. ‘The Silver Cord’ is King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard’s 25th album, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have new tricks up their billowing sleeves.
This shiny chrome entry in their never-ending catalogue is an odyssey of sounds not charted before by the sextet, offering their take on electronica and anything you might consider synonymous with a mid-budget Playstation 2 game soundtrack.
While the Australian psychedelic shoegaze outfit have had plenty of time to develop their sound, they also have the guts to subvert all expectations and challenge themselves in a new genre.
They do so while maintaining a shonky sense of King Gizzard charm, whether it lands or not. Maybe this is the greatest prank of 2023?
Earlier tracks like Theia and The Silver Cord do a good job to set the short but ambitious record up without sounding too cheesy. Gilgamesh is a step away from higher pitches and more like an underground space DJhas taken over the decks, delving into darker sonics with more bass. Set against each other they make for a more well-rounded story, embracing eccentricity without becoming untethered.
A King Gizzard album shouldn’t be boring — it’s an event, a chance to be consumed by peculiar sounds that have been driven to their maximum capabilities — because the band are anything but subtle. ‘The Silver Cord’ isn’t the most groundbreaking electronic album of 2023, but it’s fun and well developed. You’ll find moments to laugh and think to yourself, “Of course they did this.” Who else would try and pull something so wild so deep into their career?
