On ‘Someday, Now’, Katy J Pearson seems to have reinvented herself somewhat. The Bristol artist has traded the threads of Americana that held her first two albums together for bundles of ever so slightly sullen pop that have her audible self boldly sprawled across them.
Whenever an artist evolves the response is often measured in terms of excitement and grief, but here Pearson pushes back with a sense of honesty that holds ‘Someday, Now’ in a chokehold throughout its runtime.
This attitude was no doubt essential to the shaping of the record. At multiple points there are moments of candour that cut through — as Save Me’s low-key new wave rolls on Pearson sings: “You open me up, see I’m not that tough, when you open that bottle of grief.”
Elsewhere, Maybe delivers on that promising pop direction with a self-affirming sense of clarity. It’s particularly refreshing because, as good as Pearson’s early records were, the saccharine aesthetic that accompanied her music distracted somewhat from the substance found in her work.
Pushing further into new sounds, Someday and Constant arrive carrying smeared horn tones and resonant synth sections, adding a new level of depth. Pearson juxtaposes her vocals, sweet enough to tie knots in cherry stems, against these textures and in doing so finds an anchor that can’t be weighed. ‘Someday, Now’ might be different — more serious, more ambitious — but it’s also more obviously hers than any previous outings.
