On the surface, Patrick Kindlon is one of the most comically cynical writers in hardcore’s recent history. But Drug Church’s fifth album ‘Prude’ is so much more than that — there is painfully catchy and arresting guitar work that keeps the record moving, along with genuine depth of feeling.
‘Prude’ is home to moments suitable for pulling your boss limb from limb, but also empathetic and sorrowful social justice parables. Demolition Man, for example, emphasises the feeling of being trapped under the thumb of purposeless jobs and being either idyllically oblivious or excruciatingly frustrated.
Equally, by giving you all the tools to do something about your less-than-satisfactory situation, opener Mad Care may as well drop a life altering decision in your lap. It doesn’t hurt that both songs rip.
‘Prude’ isn’t without its own melancholic tragedies, though. Hey Listen carries the most glowing of all its guitar sequences but they’re opposed by the mundane horror of missing teens.
Kindlon is adept at zeroing in on things to manipulate — you’ll probably end up buying whatever he’s selling on each track, because deep down you do feel inadequate and he capitalises on those tiny misfortunes that people seldom speak of.
There’s nothing much like being reminded how much the world pins you down when it wants to, but ‘Prude’ helps you to wriggle free a little. Whether it’s unhealthy habits being broken while leading to inspiration (Business Ethics) or gross God complexes (Peer Review), it’s apparent that we’ve got enough grit to not give up. Drug Church don’t want you to.
