Soft Play have announced their first new album in six years.
'Heavy Jelly' will be released on July 19, following up their 2018 LP 'Acts Of Fear and Love', which was put out under their previous moniker Slaves.
The album's name came from a description a Jiu-Jitsu instructor gave to Laurie Vincent when explaining how much resistance to apply during a demonstration. “Life is heavy, but it’s also funny,” said the other half of the duo Isaac Holman.
“We’re not gonna be the band that leads your protest march really eloquently, but we might be the band that motivates you to go down the gym or start doing something productive and that’s important too," added Vincent. “What we can do is sing about relatable things and share that with people.”
Alongside details of the record, the duo have shared the snotty punk track Act Violently, which will appear on the album alongside the previously released Mirror Muscles and Punk's Dead. It was written after the pair had a near miss with an e-scooter as they left an album session in Margate at The Libertines’ Albion Rooms studio. Vincent explained:
“The whole walk back to the studio, we were discussing our contempt for e-scooter drivers. They should be illegal. They shouldn’t be on the road. They should need a theory test. It was just a rich well to discuss, and the song’s about that.”
