Kasabian - Happenings (Album Review)

Kasabian have been one of the most successful indie bands of the past 20 years thanks to enduring hits including Club Foot, Underdog and Fire, seeing off the exit of singer Tom Meighan in 2020 to continue their popularity under Serge Pizzorno.

Following a storming surprise Glastonbury set and sellout homecoming show in Leicester, their eighth album ‘Happenings’ feels like an attempt to underline their well-worn credentials, returning to a more familiar sound after experimenting with techno trappings on their previous record.

Darkest Lullaby feels like a classic Kasabian stomper and is sure to be a favourite at their energetic live shows.

Call is more electronic, recalling the group’s 2014 album ‘48:13’ — it’s not as comfortable a fit as their usual fare but it is to their credit that they haven’t rested on their laurels, especially 20 years on from their debut.

How Far Will You Go has ferocious, almost punk, energy to it as it harks back to Shoot The Runner from their second album ‘Empire’, although it is perhaps not quite as strong as that old favourites. Breaking the tape before the two minute mark, though, it’s a short, sharp jolt of rock ‘n’ roll.

Come Back To Me Good is one of the strongest tracks the group has put out in some time. It possesses a summery pop vibe perfect for a festival singalong and while Serge might not be the greatest vocalist on the planet, this is a showcase for him as a frontman and lyricist, finding a balance between their evolving sound and something familiar.

At under 30 minutes, this is one of Kasabian’s shortest albums but it packs in a lot of styles, some of which don’t always mesh together perfectly. Not short on ambition, it proves that the band shouldn't be discounted as they search for a seventh consecutive number one album in the UK.
