Brian D'Addario is best known as half of The Lemon Twigs, the retro-fabulous indie-pop band who have delivered five stellar, eclectic albums since their debut ‘Do Hollywood’ arrived in 2016. Their sound, especially on their most recent LPs, is an infectious blend of late ‘60s psychedelia and Beach Boys melody and Brian’s ‘Till The Morning’ is cut from similar cloth.
Equally, while this is billed as a Brian solo record it is worth acknowledging that his bandmate and brother Michael D’Addario pops up on a couple of tracks and produces the album. The title track is in a similar vein to the latest Twigs output — it’s a luscious soft rock track perfect for the coming summer months — but it also features prominent keyboards while showing that Brian is a fine vocalist on his own, away from the gorgeous harmonies he creates with Michael.
Song of Everyone is another slight departure with a gorgeous, almost jazz-like, acoustic intro that segues into Brian’s vocals. It’s more stripped back than most of The Lemon Twigs’ output and it is good to hear a more laid back side to his writing.
Nothing on My Mind threatens to continue this trope with another acoustic intro before exploding into life, driven by pounding drums. The two tracks offer different sides to Brian’s sound as both a musician and songwriter, working well alongside one another.
One Day I’m Coming features a beautiful slide guitar intro, with Brian’s vocals more strained and raw, streaks of heartbreak clear to hear. Only To Ease My Mind, meanwhile, recalls ‘60s folk-rock both lyrically and sonically, with the influence of Crosby, Stills & Nash and Simon & Garfunkel apparent.
‘Till The Morning’ continues a fine run of form for the D’Addario boys and, as ever, it is impressive to see Brian find the sweet spot between homage, pastiche and something original. Never does it sound simply like a knock off Brian Wilson or John Lennon record, which is testament to the strength of the writing.
