Since first making a splash in 2021, Divorce have been steadily amassing buzz thanks to their blend of alt-country, indie-folk and more besides. The Nottingham band’s debut album ‘Drive to Goldenhammer’ offers a glimpse into the future with the arrival of a fresh, vibrant voice.
Opener Antarctica instantly captures the attention with its electronic drums and slightly discordant riffs, with warm harmonies adding folksy melody as it twists and turns, never quite going where you might expect.
Packed with wry lyrics and a welcome sense of fun, Hangman has a psychedelic tinge to it and there is a thrill in hearing the band’s ever-evolving blend of styles — it’s full of life, unorthodox and entirely riveting.
Fronted by bassist Tiger Cohen-Towell, Fever Pitch is a blistering track that borrows more from grunge, with Adam Peter-Smith’s guitar work impressing immensely. He seamlessly adapts to the style they are employing, just as Cohen-Towell finds a balance between softer tones and others packed with grit.
Karen initially feels like a genuine outlier with its beautiful acoustic intro eventually unfurling in its final moments, Kasper Sandstrom’s drums helping the track build towards a frenetic, almost metal deterioration.
The triumphant 12 tracks here really cement Divorce as a must listen. It’s the highly eclectic arrival of one of the next big things on the British indie- scene, sure to please fans of Black Country, New Road or English Teacher while remaining uniquely theirs. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly which genre it falls into, making it all the more exciting as it skirts folk, indie, country and heavier sounds without sacrificing the band’s singular identity.
