Billie Joe Armstrong's Green Day Side Project Pinhead Gunpowder Announce Second Album 'Unt'

Friday, 06 September 2024 Written by Jon Stickler

Billie Joe Armstrong's side project Pinhead Gunpowder have announced their second album will arrive next month.

The East Bay punks, comprising Green Day frontman Armstrong, touring guitarist Jason White, drummer Aaron Cometbus and bassist Bill Schneider, will release 'Unt' through 1-2-3-4 Go Records on October 18, following up 2008's 'West Side Highway' EP and their 1997 debut LP 'Goodbye Ellston Avenue'.

Recorded in 2023 with longtime collaborator Chris Dugan, 'Unt' is previewed by the opening title track, a tight, no frills punk song that offers up the same infectious energy that Green Day fans fell in love with back in the early '90s. Alongside the record's announcement, Cometbus wrote in a statement:

"Pinhead Gunpowder started writing songs in 1990 and made our first 7” the following spring. Nearly every year since, we’ve met up to play. Some years we recorded – five albums and 11 EPs – and some years we played shows.

"But since 2010, we’ve been playing just for ourselves, something bands forget to do. Rather than ‘writing for the new album’ or rehearsing to get ready for tour, we went back to the basement every year. We lived in the house we’d built, remembering how we’d made the music for each other in the first place. We played all over the world – well, at least Oakland, Singapore and New York – but only for each other. We worked on the reissues of our back catalogue, too, and found ourselves fonder of each other and more family-like than ever.

"A new record was only a matter of time, but between the members’ other bands, projects, and families that was hard to find. When we finally did, we were all surprised. We think it’s our best yet – our catchiest, most collaborative, and most poignant."

Meanwhile, Green Day are currently in the middle of the North American leg of their Saviors Tour, celebrating their 2024 album of the same and the anniversaries of 1994's 'Dookie' and 2004's 'American Idiot'.

Green Day will continue their 'American Idiot' 20th anniversary celebrations with the release of an extensive deluxe edition on October 25.
