Mdou Moctar Announce New Acoustic Re-Recording Of Latest Album 'Tears For Injustice'

Mdou Moctar have shared details of a new version of their 2024 album 'Funeral For Justice'.
Titled 'Tears Of Injustice', the project is a re-recording of May's 'Funeral For Justice', rearranged with acoustic and traditional Tuareg instrumentation. It'll arrive on February 28 via Matador.
The Nigerian quartet brought the album together at Brooklyn's Bunker Studio with engineer Seth Manchester two days after wrapping their 2023 US tour, after band members Moctar, Ahmoudou Madassane and Souleymane Ibrahim were unable to return home due to a military coup in Niger. The band's US-based Mikey Coltun explained:
"We wanted to make a separate version of Funeral for people to hear. We’re always playing around with arrangements at shows. We wanted to prove that we could do it on a record, too. And there’s a whole other side of the band that comes out when we play a stripped-down set. It becomes something new.
"When Mdou writes the lyrics, he typically writes them with an acoustic guitar. So you're getting closer to that original moment. It retains heaviness, but it's haunting."
He also revealed that the group, "didn’t really work on the arrangements prior to going in. We’d just play, find the feel, and do the song."

Led by the eponymous guitarist, Mdou Moctar are currently touring North America and play a show at White Eagle Hall in Jersey City, New Jersey tomorrow (October 3).
