Almost four years on from her death, SOPHIE’s influence continues to reverberate. Numerous artists operating in disparate genres have paid tribute to her groundbreaking work, showcasing a profound and lasting  impact on contemporary music. Honouring her legacy, though, poses a complex challenge.

Known for her creativity and technical prowess, she left behind a wealth of unreleased material, from unfinished tracks to DJ set snippets, and rumours of collaborations and lost songs fuel the desire to explore her artistic output further. The release of this self-titled posthumous album finds her brother, and regular collaborator, Benny Long, taking up the baton and finishing the planned successor to ‘ Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides’, SOPHIE’s 2018 debut LP.

As a whole, the album beautifully captures the euphoric atmosphere she perfected. The lead single, Reason Why, featuring Kim Petras and BC Kingdom, is a joyful dance track that echoes SOPHIE’s signature sound, almost acting as a spiritual sequel to Nothing More To Say.

Why Lies, another collaboration with BC Kingdom featuring LIZ, and Always and Forever, with Hannah Diamond, showcase SOPHIE’s pop flair. The latter feels like a heartfelt goodbye, evoking a sense of nostalgic reminiscence with its delicate synth arrangements and ethereal vocals.

My Forever, a slice of irresistible synth-pop, captures SOPHIE's affection for ‘80s hit making. With memorable hooks that evoke nostalgia, it marks a departure from the album’s darker, more experimental tracks, revealing her versatility and leaning into the surprising tonal shifts that were a trademark of her music.

Yet, despite the upbeat lyrics celebrating party culture, nights in Ibiza, and high-end fashion, there is an unavoidable underlying melancholy that shrouds the album. This is a testament to a truly innovative approach to music and a reminder of the talent we’ve lost.
