Lola Young’s path seemed to have been set out for her — the young singer-songwriter has a John Lewis Christmas ad plus BBC Sound of… and Brit Rising Star award nominations under her belt already — but her debut album ‘This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway’ isn’t interested in following an easy roadmap. Its 11 tracks showcase genuine musical range while offering comfort and tranquillity amid romantic turmoil.
Wish You Were Dead is a compelling, emotionally-charged anthem that delves deep into the struggle of breaking away from toxic relationships. The song’s candid and introspective lyrics give listeners a glimpse into Young’s struggles, showcasing honesty and vulnerability with clever and insightful wordplay. Accompanied by a raw vocal performance, the song captures the hairpin turns of healing and self-discovery.
Gradually building in intensity until its full-throttle crescendo, the standout Conceited comes to life with its powerful second chorus.
Here, Young sets off a palpable release of anger directed at narcissistic exes, escalating in fury alongside percussion that matches her step for step.
Lead single Messy is another winner as Young turns her gaze inward, serving up a poignant moment of self-reflection set against a pop backdrop adorned with just the right amount of sass.
Intrusive Thoughts is another deeply personal insight into Young’s personal life, shedding light on her ongoing battle with mental health issues and the titular thoughts. She wishes that she could “kill the lot”, and her heartfelt vocal performance captures the intensity of her experience. That’s ‘This Wasn’t Meant For You Anyway’ in a nutshell — a raw, honest expression of passion, anger, and resilience. This is the real deal.
