‘So Close to What’ is a reflective record. Having broken out musically at just 14 with the viral hit One Day, Tate McRae’s journey has been rapid but remarkably reflective. On 2024’s ‘Think Later’ she delivered a vivid exploration of young womanhood, complete with its attendant themes of self-discovery and resilience, but with ‘So Close to What’ she revisits the challenges of growing up.
There’s palpable excitement woven into the narrative and Miss Possessive, the album’s opener, immediately establishes McRae’s confident new approach. The retro-pop track pulsates with energy as her husky vocals deliver a fierce message of protectiveness.
Unfolding in two distinct phases, McRae initially confronts a rival with playful aggression (“Pretty girl, you’re gonna learn a lesson”) before that quickly gives way to simmering rage and a hint of menace. It encapsulates empowerment with a sharp edge.
2 Hands offers a sultry exploration of intimacy, with minimalist production highlighting McRae’s vocal control, while Dear God is a pleasingly complex dive into the complex aftermath of a relationship. Its melody is deceptively upbeat, but the lyrics cut back to explore the internal struggle between wanting to erase the past and the memories that linger.
Inspiring countless mashups with Pussycat Dolls’ Buttons, Sports Car finds McRae confidently navigating the seductive curves of 2000s-inspired pop, its bass-heavy rhythm creating a late-night atmosphere that perfectly complements her hushed vocals.
The album closes with Green Light, a return to McRae’s vulnerable roots. The track captures the frustrating experience of being emotionally unavailable, even when presented with the opportunity for a healthy relationship. It’s deeply personal, revealing past hurt and insecurities that prevent her from moving forward.
‘So Close to What’ is a compelling portrait of a young artist navigating love, loss, and self-discovery. McRae’s vocal talents and knack for catchy melodies are undeniable, but it's the raw honesty and vulnerability of her lyrics that truly connects, weaving a cohesive narrative of growth and self-acceptance.
