Liam Payne has died aged 31.

The former One Direction singer was found dead at around 5pm local time (9pm BST) on Wednesday (October 16) after falling from a third floor balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, local police said.

In a statement, local ambulance manager Alberto Crescenti told Argentina's Todo Noticias TV channel:

"At 17.04 through the 911 integrated public safety system, we were alerted of a person who was in an internal courtyard of the management of a south house hotel.

"At 17.11 a SAME team arrived and verified the death of this man and later we found out that he was a singer in a musical group.

"Unfortunately, he had injuries that were incompatible with life, as a result of his fall, so we had to confirm his death, there was no possibility of resuscitation."

Payne was born in 1993 in Wolverhampton, England and was just 16 years old when he became part of One Direction, along with Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and Harry Styles.

Formed by music executive Simon Cowell on reality show The X Factor in 2010, the group went on to become one of the world's most successful pop acts, selling over 70 million records and performing in stadiums around the world.

They went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016, with all five members embarking on solo careers. Payne released his debut solo album, 'LP1', in 2019 through Capitol Records.

Celebrities who have paid tribute to the pop star include Olly Murs, Liam Gallagher from Oasis, Dermot O'Leary, who hosted The X Factor when Liam appeared, American singer Charlie Puth, Backstreet Boys, DJ and producer Zedd, and Paris Hilton.

Payne had a seven-year-old son, Bear, with former partner Cheryl Tweedy of Girls Aloud.
