On ‘Evergreen’, Sophie Allison takes us back to the start. The singer-songwriter has been making music under the name Soccer Mommy since she was 17 and first began uploading her home-recorded songs to Bandcamp. In the years that have followed she’s become known for her dreamy, shoegazey sound and sentimental lyrics, but here she trades indie-rock bite in for a stripped-back sound akin to her lo-fi early days.
‘Evergreen’ came into being after Allison suffered a major loss in her personal life, and this album is about grief and learning to coexist with it, even finding beauty in the most tragic of circumstances.
The album begins with the enchantingly sombre Lost, which summarises the sadness and frustration of not being able to talk to someone when they’re gone. “If I had another chance, I’d tell her then,” Allison sings.
The following track, M, is more textured. Allison’s acoustic guitar is now accompanied by warbling strings, while the end of the song is played out by the dulcet tones of a flute. The rock-leaning Driver kicks in for a complete change of pace with its defiant lyrics and heavier sounds
Changes is the closest thing to a ballad on ‘Evergreen’ — it feels grand and orchestral, with a breathy chorus: “It’s hard enough to know that / Everything will fade to / Memory in time.” The lyrics are devastating, leaning into both nostalgia and learning to cope with the uncomfortable inevitability of change.
Thinking Of You also shows that heartbreaking songs don’t have to be morose, with the warped guitars that ramp up at the chorus complementing Allison’s gorgeous, forlorn vocals. The album finishes with the title track, and it’s a real slug to the gut. It details the pain of being stuck in the past and how once happy memories can become painful reminders of what once was in the midst of grief and loss. Allison’s storytelling and songwriting capabilities have undoubtedly reached new highs here. This is her strongest, and most personal, work to date.
