Kylie Minogue - Tension II (Album Review)

Sometimes things take on a life of their own. What began as a few more songs for an extended version of 2023’s ‘Tension’ turned into a sequel for Kylie Minogue, and one that matches its predecessor. Here the Australian icon showcases her ability to evolve while keeping the shimmering dance-pop coming.

Lights Camera Action sets the tone for a playful album that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s a pure dance track complete with fun, campy lyrics: “I look stellar tonight / My armour is by Gaultier.” This melts into the sultry Taboo, another mover that’s tons of fun.

Minogue’s vocals sound sensual and confident, with Someone For Me keeping the sex appeal coming. “I know the night's about to end / I’m hoping he might have a friend,” she whispers over backing that’s jumped straight out of a ‘90s superclub.

Good As Gone and Hello keep that vibe going before things slow with Shoulda Left Ya. While less in-your-face than the rest of the album, it’s surprisingly uplifting despite its subject matter. Still, next to the bangers it counts as a lull.

The last four songs are all collaborations, and a mixed bag. Edge Of Saturday Night, with The Blessed Madonna, is an infectious slice of house with a chorus driven by fervent keys in its chorus, while Midnight Ride, with Orville Peck, plays the depth of his baritone off Minogue’s softer tones perfectly.

Then there’s the more rote, repetitive My Oh My, which is at least enlivened by playful lyrics and great vocal performances from Minogue, Bebe Rexha and Tove Lo, and the pedestrian Dance Alone, which stars Sia. As the closer, it’s a little bit of a damp squib given the glitzy riot that’s gone before it.
