Linkin Park’s ‘From Zero’ faced an uphill battle from the off, with sky-high expectations in place as the band sought to uphold a tremendous legacy. It’s telling, then, that their first record since reuniting isn’t a continuation but a reset.
Having been introduced at a short livestream by co-vocalist Mike Shinoda, it’s readily apparent that singer Emily Armstrong is spearheading a new era rather than serving as a replacement for the late Chester Bennington.
On ‘From Zero’ Linkin Park sound like they’re having fun and seeing where things go, which is a rare commodity in bands at stadium level. They bounce between eras with aplomb, throwing out flourishes that will delight long-term fans without entirely showing their hand for what might come along in future.
Lead single The Emptiness Machine is home to ‘Meteora’ riffage and drum patterns, while Cut the Bridge sits more comfortably alongside the arena-ready rap-rock of ‘Minutes to Midnight’. Heavy is the Crown closes an impressive opening run, painting a picture of a band largely reinvigorated following the disappointing ‘One More Light’, their final record before Bennington’s death in 2017.
Shinoda’s flow is instantly recognisable throughout, with the bouncing Two Faced going all the way back to the start with Joe Hahn’s early-2000s scratching, but it’s not hit after hit after hit. Over Each Other is weak, doing everything that turned people off about latter day Linkin Park, and the trap-rock of Overflow lacks the crescendo it desperately needs.
Still, they make up for it with several moments when Armstrong gets to put her stamp on things. The hardcore-inspired Casualty is driven on by a furious vocal performance, but the tender closer Good Things Go flips that script, showing the sort of vulnerability she can muster. Her screams are often reminiscent of Bennington’s but she’s clearly not offering up a pale impersonation — this is about Linkin Park 2.0, with a real feeling of focusing on celebrating enjoyment in your craft and creativity.
