Beabadoobee — real name Beatrice Laus — has spent the past seven years growing up in the spotlight. Along the way there has been viral success, critical acclaim and high profile gigs, as evidenced by recent support slots on Taylor Swift’s enormous Eras tour. Underpinning it all has been a reverence for ‘90s alt rock, shoegaze and grunge, retrofitted with a gooey indie-pop core.

On her previous album, 2022’s ‘Beatopia’, Laus channelled a very particular atmosphere, fashioning a wonderland that fused these influences with her childhood imagination. Her third album is more reflective — there’s a return to a musical style more reminiscent of her debut, but with added maturity and compositional growth.

Trading the high rise concrete and glass of London for sunkissed Malibu, ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ was made with veteran producer Rick Rubin, who suggested that Laus’s demos should stand on their own acoustically before adding any embellishments. This song-first approach has worked wonders.

This is a self-assured album that tackles a new stage of her life as a young adult and potential arena headliner in her own right. Take A Bite is breezy, summery fun as Laus’s voice glides over acoustic strumming, while she sings of “craving expectations that are unattainable temptations.”

California is glossy grunge shot through with the sort of textural adventure that’s led Gen Z’s revitalisation of shoegaze, while there are a couple of songs that take cues from Swift’s playbook. Ever Seen is feather-light country pop while Tie My Shoes is less fragile than it is open, its warmth splitting the difference between ‘Red’-era emotion and the vulnerability of Laus’s indie peer Phoebe Bridgers.

While the ingredients remain much the same as earlier Beabadoobee, there’s hard-won skill in how they’re wielded here. More than anything, ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ shows an artist comfortable in her own skin, putting her own spin on a familiar style.
