Godspeeed You! Black Emperor - No Title As of 13 February 2024, 28,340 Dead (Album Review)

Godspeed You! Black Emperor have always excelled at crafting poignant, expansive post-rock, telling instrumental stories where words won’t do. Never has that sentiment been more true than with ‘No Title as of 13 February 2024, 28,340 Dead’. The band’s eighth album’s title makes explicit reference to the death toll in Gaza and its six movements are odes to both the devastation wrought and also small glimmers of hope.
Sun Is A Hole Sun Is Vapors opens the album with instruments building upon one another oh-so gradually — it’s the kind of opening GY!BE often employ, but the human devastation at the album’s core makes it all the more affecting.
Babys In A Thundercloud unfurls across 13-plus minutes, its squalls of reverb-drenched guitars and strings vying for space before a final stanza when it becomes a veritable eruption of feeling.
As good as ‘G_d’s Pee At State’s End’ was, ‘No Title…’ is arguably the band’s strongest post-hiatus work, with the horrors occurring in Gaza spurring a famously outspoken political collective into action.
Raindrops Cast In Lead pits urgent strings in its first half against sorrowful chords in its second, with an almost overwhelming sense of loss building to an electrifying, explosive peak. As its title suggests, the closer Grey Rubble - Green Shoots finds something to cling to.
For more than two decades, GY!BE have been a force of nature in post-rock, rejecting much of the modern music industry, and that has allowed them to operate in their own, fiercely independent and opinionated space. As much as their lauded compositional and songwriting skill, that’s what makes ‘No Title…’ such a triumph.
