Peter Doherty has shared a new song, Calvados.

The uplifting, acoustic guitar-led track, complete with strings, draws inspiration from Normandy, where The Libertines and Babyshambles frontman lives, and is described as, "a paean to the fine apple brandy" produced there. He said:

"Where I live there’s a fellow in town, he’s got a shop that specialises in Calvados and ciders; the apple juice becomes cider becomes Calvados. He took me on a tour of all the old Calvados makers, in his van, place to place, staying with them. It’s that story.

"The line ‘Slow and steady is the way!/The way it was, the way it is…’, that’s how it is. These farms have been there for generations. You can’t hurry it, you wait for the apples to grow, you wait for the seasons to change, it’s not a laboratory. And at the end you get this incredible elixir. Fire water!"

The song serves as the second preview of Doherty's first solo album in nine years, 'Felt Better Alive', due out on May 16 via his own Strap Originals label.

Doherty shared initial details of the record, as well as its title track, in January alongside news of his Anywhere In Albion Tour of the UK and Felt Better Alive In Europe Tour in the spring. Tickets are on sale now.

He'll follow up those dates with a Spotlight Show at The Great Escape Festival on May 14, showcasing his Strap Originals label, before celebrating the record at five new in-store gigs in Leeds, Liverpool, Nantwich, Kingston and London between May 16 and 21. Tickets go on general sale at 10am on Thursday (February 27).

He'll also appear at In It Together festival in South Wales in May, ahead of slots at Together Again in Cheshire in July, and Sheffield's Don Valley Bowl in August as part of the touring Rock N Roll Circus. Tickets for those dates are on sale now.
