Fresh from their UK debut shows to a packed out crowd at London’s Flowerpot venue and Camden’s Koko, The Drums bring their 80s trippy surf sound to our shores this December 7th. Second single I Felt Stupid is a hazy ride through a vaguely familiar summer memory. The single could almost play as a soundtrack to a photo montage from a lovely summer holiday you once had.
Blending The Cure beats with Empire of the Sun’s psychedelic sound, The Drums’ catchy tune is both pleasing and cool in equal measure. Resting on a bed of new wave synth pop, I Felt Stupid wonderfully highlights the band’s fondness for the surf boom pop of the early 1960s. Music that was straightforward pop, with catchy melodies and memorable lyrics, and The Drums clearly love the instant gratification of this type of sound.
Second song on the single follows a similar, yet more sombre route. Down By The Water is a tussle in lost love and devotion, but nothing to get down about. Singer Jonathan Pierce’s vocals are tender, bathed in emotion and meaningful lyrics. As he purrs “if you fall asleep down by the water, baby I’ll carry you all the way home”, you almost want to be the one he’s singing too.
The Drums aren’t just for Summer, they’re for life...ok, maybe not life, but like a decent lightweight raincoat, they work in all seasons. Their music has a place in the dreary English winter time, reminding of the sunny days past and to come. And with a slot on the Shockwaves NME Awards Tour early 2010 with the likes of the brilliant Maccabees & Bombay Bicycle Club, this lively New York four piece are sure to be next year’s big thing.
