Hailing from Melbourne and forming as a trio in 1999, The Cat Empire have now doubled to a six-piece. With a genuine love of good, honest music the group like to make music where, according to them, 'The hip-hop community dance to Gypsy, the jazz purists jump to hip-hop, the Latinos bop to reggae, the elderly sweat to funk, the youth swing to dancehall and everyone wakes up a little happier.' A very eclectic group then!
Currently, the Cat Empire comprises of Felix Riebl (percussion and vocals), Harry James Angus (trumpet and vocals), Ollie McGill (keyboard and backing vocals), Ryan Monro (bass and backing vocals), Will Hull-Brown (drums) and Jamshid "Jumps" Khadiwhala (decks, percussion). They are also commonly backed by the Empire Horns, a brass duo, and have recurring guest musicians.
Randomly taking their name from a picture of cats wearing hats and holding guns drawn by Felix’s younger brother Max, a cold Tooheys beer and some hand-waving activities, The Cat Empire are a good time band for good time people. Devotees of everyone from Just Jack to early Acid Jazz should form an orderly queue for tickets.
