Canadian indie rock collective Broken Social Scene have just announced some more UK shows in late June.
Band members Kevin Drew and Charles Spearin began this journey with a small group of friends back in 1999. These days, featuring as few as six and as many as nineteen members, Broken Social Scene is made up of musicians and singers from many other groups and solo projects, mainly based around the city of Toronto.
The group’s sound could be described as being a collective combination of all its members’ musical projects. Baroque pop perhaps? Mainly consisting of a variety of sounds, grand orchestrations featuring guitars, horns, woodwinds and violins, unusual song structures and an experimental production style.
Broken Social Scene are currently recording their fifth full-length album, which is due for release on May 4th 2010. If you're unsure as to what category their music falls in, then you could check out the album's sample track ‘World Sick’, which is available for free from the band’s website.
The sprawling Canadian collective has been whittled down to a core of seven musicians – plus twice as many making cameos – for the recording of the album entitled ‘Forgiveness Rock Record’.
Kevin Drew, Brendan Canning and Andrew Whiteman are leading the fray for the new album. Drew had this to say about the recording: "This is a crazy state of limbo right now and we tried to embrace it and bring those subjects up here and there. We had lots of conversations about how we could sing about our views and opinions without trying to make a poor man's REM song ... I remember when U2's single [Get On Your Boots] came out, I thought, 'All right, what's it gonna be? What's the man gonna sing about?' And Bono's opening line was like, 'I don't wanna talk about politics, I just wanna rock!' And I thought, "Uh oh - we're in trouble".
Broken Social Scene will play the following UK dates:
June 2010
26th O2 Academy, Birmingham
28th Manchester Club Academy
29th Rescue Rooms, Nottingham
30th HMV Forum, London
July 2010
