Irish and Czech combo Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, better known as Folk-rock duo The Swell Season, are to play the Royal Festival Hall in London this October.
The former singer of Irish band The Frames Glen Hansard and Czech singer and pianist Marketa Irglova emerged in 2007 after starring in the Irish indie musical film ‘Once’ which told the story of two struggling musicians. From then on the duo referred to themselves as ‘The Swell Season’ in promotion of their performances until the name stuck for the two in 2008.
With two albums to their name, their debut record, self-titled ‘The Swell Season’, came to materialise after a both Glen and Marketa were approached by a Czech film director asking for a soundtrack to his film ‘Beauty In Trouble’. The album was the first work that Glen Hansard had been a part of outside his previous band The Frames.
In between the follow-up to ‘The Swell Season’ the soundtrack for the film 'Once' was released in 2007 chased by 2009 studio album ‘Strict Joy’. The album was received with good praise with Spin Magazine reviewing the record with 4 out of 5 stars. "If Glen Hansard's and Markéta Irglová's roles in the hit Irish indie film ‘Once’ unintentionally wove the tale of their real-life falling in love, their second album as the Swell Season weaves the story of their falling out of it."
