Damon Albarn Admits He’s “Surprised and Nervous” for Glastonbury

Thursday, 27 May 2010 Written by Matt Hamm

Damon Albarn has described his nerves and surprise after the Gorillaz were offered U2’s Friday night slot at next month’s Glastonbury festival.

U2 were forced to pull out after lead singer Bono had to have emergency surgery on his back, allowing Damon a chance to headline the festival for the second time in two years. Chatting to Zane Lowe on BBC Radio One, Albarn assured the DJ that it will be completely different from playing with Blur:

I’m not thinking for one second that I can compete with that kind of thing. I just hope we can convince Lou Reed and he grasps that it’s a real privilege to get the chance to do it. Then we’d have a complete house and that really would be amazing”.

Damon also expressed his delight in being able to enjoy the festival this year with a performance at the start of the weekend instead of closing with Blur right at the end. The singer explained “we had to get off stage and get in out bus and drive straight off, which was really strange”.

Stereoboard would never wish any harm on Bono’s behalf but if his injury means that Gorillaz get to headline the greatest music festival on Earth...then so be it.

(Sorry Bono...but not that much)
