Following yesterday’s sad news of the death of Stuart Cable, Welsh rock band Stereophonics have today paid tribute to their former drummer and founding member.
Stuart Cable played drums for the Stereophonics during the band’s first few albums with the relationship between himself and lead singer Kelly Jones gradually turning sour as the band rose to commercial fame. As a result of the constant friction, the drummer was sacked from the band in 2003.
In a recent interview with BBC Wales Kelly Jones explained that both he and Cable sorted out their differences and patched up the friendship over a pint shortly after the drummers departure. Also revealing that the pair met up down the pub a year after to catch up. Since then, both Jones and Cable have remained friends with Kelly explaining that he last saw Stuart Cable only a week ago. The singer also paid tribute to the drummer, who he described as a good friend and a wonderful musician.
Other stars who have paid tribute to Stuart Cable include welsh singer Cerys Matthews who issued a statement saying she was “shocked and saddened” at the news of his death, describing Cable as “such generous company.”
The Manic Street Preachers, also shocked by the news, spoke to fans upon hearing of the drummer’s death. "Whenever you met Stuart, you always walked away with a massive smile on your face. Such a gigantic personality which was reflected in his drumming. He really will be missed. Our sincere condolences to his family and friends."
Turning to broadcasting after splitting from Stereophonics, Stuart Cable became a well respected figure on BBC Radio Wales, presenting his own radio rock show while working on his own up-and-coming band ‘Killing For Company’, who were set to appear at this year’s Download festival.
Fellow radio presenter Steve Lamacq of BBC 6Music also paid tribute, describing the drummer as “someone - and this is the highest accolade I could pay to anyone - you wouldn't mind being stuck on a tour bus with for five hours on the way to Germany. It would fly by," he said.
In latest news concerning the drummer’s death, a post mortem has now been carried out at Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil. Police have reported that the cause of Stuart Cable’s death will not be known until the toxicology test results are received in six weeks.
Cable’s death is not being treated as suspicious and an inquest date into his death has still not been sent.
Friends have said that Cable had been drinking at his local pub in Trecynon on Sunday evening.
More news as we hear it.
