Campaign Set-Up To Launch 'Local Boy In The Photograph' To UK Number One

An internet campaign has been launched to get the Stereophonics first single ‘Local Boy In The Photograph’ to Number One in tribute to Stuart Cable.

Former drummer for Stereophonics Stuart Cable sadly died this week on Monday aged just forty years old. The campaign was launched following a statement issued by the drummer’s family paying tribute to Cable saying: “On Monday we lost not just a rock star but a father, son and brother.”

Fans of the rock star have now set-up a Facebook group urging people to download the band’s 1997 single Local Boy In The Photograph. The group, which has already attracted more than 1,000 members having been set-up on Tuesday night, asks fans already connected to Facebook to download the song for this week’s chart countdown. The group aims to reach 30,000 downloads to get the track to Number One.

Creator of the campaign group, Russ Burt, a 36-year-old from Port Talbot decided to start the Facebook group with his friend Simon Cunnick after hearing the sad news of Cable’s death on Monday. Burt said: "When I heard the news I was in shock all morning, he was only human obviously but you just don't imagine someone with a personality like his to die so young”.

Speaking about setting-up the campaign Russ continued to explain. "I logged on to Facebook to see loads of people posting a tribute as their status so I had the idea to get a group together for all the fans. Then Local Boy came on the radio and the lyrics felt so right and I then had an idea to see if we could get it back up the charts. I thought it would be the perfect tribute to Stuart."

Having seen Stereophonics perform live in 1999, prior to Cable’s sacking from the group in 2003, Burt felt that the song was just perfect to represent Stuart Cable’s huge personality.

"I set up the group as a way to show respect for who many felt was the biggest personality on the Stereophonics. Kelly was known as the writer but Stuart was the one you noticed first with his big hair and loud personality. Local Boy seems such a fitting tribute if you listen to the words as it's about a group of friends remembering a mate who passed away."

Local Boy In The Photograph was the first single take from Stereophonics debut album ‘Word Gets Around’.
