Southern US indie-rockers Kings of Leon have played their biggest UK headline gig to date, showcasing four new tracks at their sold-out Hyde Park show in London.
The show took place yesterday, Wednesday 30th June, and totally lived up to expectations as one of the summer’s biggest events with 60,000 fans descending on Hyde Park to watch the band that Britain accepted before anyone else.
With tickets for the show selling out within minutes of going onsale, Kings of Leon were supported by fellow-Tennessee four-piece outfit The Features as well as The Black Keys and The Drums.
Of course the biggest cheers of the night were kept for the arrival of Kings of Leon who took to the stage to an almighty roar. Playing a 25-song set, consisting of a mix of tracks from all four of their albums, Kings Of Leon even threw in four brand new songs entitled ‘Immortals,’ ‘Southbound’ and ‘Radioactive’ and ‘Mary’.
Before launching into new track ‘Immortals’ frontman Caleb Followill spoke to the crowd, announcing, "Since we saw you guys last we went and made a record. That's what we put a lot of work into. Just yesterday some people at the record label got to hear a couple of songs from it. I don't know if they want us to play a bunch of new songs but I think 'F--- it' -- were gonna do it!"
So whether those new tracks will feature on Kings of Leon's fifth album or not, we’ll have to wait and see. There’s still no news of when the new album will be released, although the revealing of the new songs draws a line under two busy years of touring the band’s 2008 multi-million selling fourth album ‘Only by the Night’.
Thoroughly enjoying the gig, Followill gushing to the giant crowd said, "It's been one of the greatest experiences of my life.” Finishing with hit track ‘Use Somebody’ and then ‘Black Thumbnail’, Followill and co signed off with one last message.
“Thank you all very much. One of these days, when we're all fat and bald ... or balder, and we're sitting in Tennessee telling all our kids about all the great things that happened to us, this is gonna be one of those. It’s beautiful"
