Lincoln City Football Club formed in 1884 after the disbanding of Lincoln Rovers, formerly Lincoln Recreation. Initially an amateur association, they turned professional in the 1891–92 season.

The club was originally based at the John O'Gaunts ground, provided by wealthy local brewer Robert Dawber, before moving in 1895 to their current ground, Sincil Bank.

Nicknamed the Imps after the legend of the Lincoln Imp, which is hidden in the upper reaches of Lincoln Cathedral, their main rivals are Grimsby Town and Scunthorpe United. Traditionally, they play in red and white striped shirts with black shorts and red and white socks.
