Sunderland was established in 1879 after a meeting of schoolteachers, who had started teaching at Hendon Board School. Initially, the club was called Sunderland and District Teachers' Association Football Club, but one year later, non-teachers were allowed to join and the club's name changed to Sunderland AFC. The "AFC" stands for Association Football Club.
Together with Preston and Aston Villa, Sunderland was among the dominant football clubs in England during the 1890s. They also won the FA Cup in 1937, and again in 1973. The club were based at Roker Park from 1898 up to 1997, when they moved to the all-seater Stadium Of Light. Their nickname, the Black Cats, has only been official since 1997. Before that, they were known as the Rokerites, after their famous old ground. Their main rivals are Newcastle United, with whom they contest the Tyne–Wear derby.
