Experimental New York group Yeasayer, release their latest single, Madder Red, on the 13th of September. Taken from their new album Odd Blood, which is on sale now.
The experimental three piece have had quite a year in the UK, with headline shows and a slot at Leeds and Reading, with their visually and musically excellent live performances continuing to impress audiences.
Madder Red is one of the stand out tracks, from this impressive album. It is an experimental anthem, filled with excellent vocals and an ultra infectious chorus. The sound is quite huge and also quite Celtic, making this track a massive tribal pop anthem.
Madder Red fuses all manner of elements to create an awesome track, which is a very catchy sing-a-long with depth and atmosphere, making it just one great tracks from Odd Blood, which is an album full of great tracks.
Yeasayer are a group who refuse to be pigeon holed, they are not indie, not pop, not hip hop, not electronic, they are a little bit of everything with lashes of experimentation thrown in, and this album exemplifies this perfectly.
Already mentioning Madder Red, Ambling Alp and Mondegreen also stand out as greats amongst a track list of brilliance. Musically excellent and vocally outstanding, the music stands up on its own, but once the huge catalogue of samples and experimental elements are thrown in; the great sound is propelled into subliminal excellence.
Odd Blood is at times wacky, at times confusing, but it is altogether compelling. The attempts I have made to compare Yeasayer to any other group’s have been unsuccessful, all I will say is that there is a little bit of everything, from the prog rock experimentation of Pink Floyd, to Primal Scream’s electronic works, to the chantey vocals of The Clash and many, many other acts and influences, whilst remaining completely unique, fresh and utterly brilliant.
The musical structure and understanding of what makes a great track is fantastic and the production on this album is second to none.
Madder Red is a track, which should become a classic anthem and without doubt, Odd Blood, should be a contender for album of the year so far.
Stereoboard Rating. 10/10.
Yeasayer continue their UK tour, with dates in October, listed below.
