Castle Talk is Screaming Females fourth album, released on the 13th of September. The punk three piece from New Jersey, USA have managed to produce an album that is unthinkably good.
Marissa Paternoster’s vocals, do for this music what Siouxsie Sioux did for The Banshees and what Debbie Harry’s vocals did for Blondie and her guitar riffs are exceptional too, Mike Abbate’s bass is fantastic as well, it has a real UK new wave sound to it, straight from the early eighties and then there is the drumming from Jarrett Dougherty which keeps everything sounding tight and adds a franticness to the groups sound.
Arty, thinking man’s punk, Castle Talk is an amazing collection of brilliant tracks and it is little wonder this hard working group managed to land support slots for Dinosaur Jr., Throwing Muses and Jay Reatard along with dates, playing with Arctic Monkeys and The Dead Weather. Since 2005, this group have released 4 albums and played over 300 self-booked shows. Now that is commitment and they are obviously committed to producing excellent music also.
Punk certainly is not dead, however where lots of today’s groups have punk elements to their sound, this is pure punk music, no gimmicks, no cheese, just throbbing bass, screaming guitar riffs and angst filled vocals. Lyrically Screaming Females are bang on the money too. Uncomplicated, relevant poetry, straight from top draw of punk’s ethos.
As easy as this group are to compare to the likes of Sioxsie And The Banshees and Blondie, there are also elements of Iggy Pop And The Stooges and Echo And The Bunnymen in the mix also. This then is an album which has a classic sound to it, yet is totally up to date and fresh also.
Every track on the album offers the listener a slightly different side to the groups sound, however Laura + Marty, I Don’t Mid It and Normal are the album’s stand out tracks.
Stereoboard Rating 10/10.
