Canadian pop star Justin Bieber won big at the American Music Awards this Sunday (21st November), taking home four prizes including the coveted ‘Artist of the Year’ award.
The 16-year-old icon also took home awards for ‘Favourite Pop Album’, ‘Breakthrough Artist’ and ‘Best Male Pop Artist’, beating the likes of Eminem and Katy Perry. The young singer gave an emotional speech, clearly tugging at the heartstrings of Usher (his long-term mentor) in the process. However, not all went smoothly for the ‘Baby’ star: at one point he declared that "Without Michael Jackson, none of us would be here”, drawing a confused response from the crowd.
When asked afterwards what he meant by the statement, Bieber replied: "You know, I said, 'Without Michael we wouldn't have been here’, but we would be here, but music wouldn't be the same. I want to clarify that you'd still be born. Michael's not your dad or anything. You'd still be here. He's not your father."
Other artists who did well on the evening include Eminem and Usher,
who both picked up two awards. Muse were the only British act to feature in the winners list: the Welsh rock band picked up an award for ‘Best Alternative Rock Artist’.
