Pop superstars Katy Perry and Lady Gaga joined a legion of A-listers to celebrate as the US Senate voted to repeal their controversial ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy. The policy, which had stood for seventeen years, prohibited gays from serving openly in the US military.
This Saturday the US Senate voted 65-31 to end the policy, which was extensively prohibited in the past by Republican procedural complications. An identical bill was also backed by the House of Representatives earlier this week.
Katy Perry was one of the first to show her delight at the decision, as she retweeted a message from Pink which declared: “SUPPORTING ALL OUR TROOPS!” The singer also continued to say: “Congrats 2 US!!! REPEAL of DADT & 17 years of allowing Human Rights Violations. There's hope after all!”
Lady Gaga joined in the celebrations, posting a picture of herself from Paris with a rare smile and a piece of paper which read ‘Full Equality’. She supported the picture by Tweeting: “Can't hold back the tears+pride. We did it! Our voice was heard + today the Senate REPEALED DADT. A triumph for equality after 17 YEARS.”
The 24-year-old continued: “Today I am so proud to be American. I wish I was home so I could throw a Parade. We are on the way...to full equality.”
The bill is expected to be passed as law by way of President Obama within the next week. After the Senate vote, the president showed his joy at being able to see through a bill which was one of his key campaign promises in the run-up to the election. The president said: “By ending ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’ no longer will our nation be denied the service of thousands of patriotic Americans forced to leave the military, despite years of exemplary performance, because they happen to be gay. And no longer will many thousands more be asked to live a lie in order to serve the country they love.”
