From the first bars of 'My Body' when the jolting percussion kicks in, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Young The Giant are a seasoned band of musicians advertising their well-honed craft. In actual fact, the California quintet's age range is a mere 20 - 22, and 'My Body' is just their second single. Having already nabbed support slots for Kings Of Leon, The Futureheads and Marina & The Diamonds, as well as landing some mixing sessions at the infamous Electric Lady Studios in New York, it's time Young The Giant made their mark on the UK music scene.
In preparation for a full UK tour in May, and the release of their self-titled debut album on May 2nd, the band release this stormer of a single on Roadrunner Records. With lead singer Sameer Gadhia's haunting falsetto oozing delight all over the anthemic chorus, this is surely a new band to be reckoned with. Gadhia's voice creates a soothing intro with 'My Body's' verse, but when the chorus kicks in, there's an almost Youth & Young Manhood-era Caleb Followill roughness about it - minus the Southern drawl!
Young The Giant have been playing music together since high school, and it shows. Their tight sound and polished musicianship is a testament to how hard the band have worked to get themselves their record deal, some recognition, and a debut album to be proud of. 'My Body' is a fantastic advert for the band, nothing short of soaring, melodic rock 'n' roll that's nothing less than pure joy. When a chorus can be so addictive that it sticks in your head after one listen, then you know a band are doing something right.
If 'My Body' is an indication of what is to come from Young The Giant, then I imagine they’re on a swift path to the land of the household name. They’re definitely destined for bigger and better things, and they write songs that could easily become indie rock classics and stadium anthems – can they blow up as hugely and quickly as Kings Of Leon did? Only time will tell, but I’d suggest jumping on the bandwagon now before everyone else does.
'My Body' is released on 25th April.
