If you haven't heard of Thrice, I'm not sure I can forgive you. Granted, no album or single has entered the UK top 100, but who listens to the charts anyway? Last year they played on the main stage at Leeds and Reading Festivals (they were immense) and they supported the outstanding Brand New at Wembley Stadium prior to their own UK tour. Oh and did I mention they are awesome? They formed back in 1998, they are well known for their heavily distorted guitars, prominent lead guitars and frequent changes in time signatures.
'Yellow Belly' is the latest release by Thrice, don't let the title of the song put you off, it isn't about Whinnie the Pooh. It is very catchy and after hearing it you will be singing "you don't care, you don't care" in your head for days on end and strumming the amazing riffs against your leg as you are walking around.
This track is the first instalment of their eighth studio album 'Majors/Minors' which is to be released by Vagrant on the 20th September. Musically, there is a hint of Pearl Jam but their frontman Dustin Kensrue brings a certain edge to Thrice with his voice. He uses his voice to keep the listener engaged in a way that only 2 other artists can do, Chino Moreno and Caleb Followill. He has that sort of voice that is so sexy and passionate with a hint of melancholy that leaves you addicted, begging for more. His voice makes me want to have sex.
This band never disappoints, their last album was very different to anything else they have released, it was simple and beautiful where as this has a slight hint of aggression. This song brings the grit of Beggars, the energy and soul of The Artist in the Ambulance and the raw passion of Vheissu. They are a unit, very much together and you can hear that through from the bass, through to the drums, lyrics, guitar and the voice. Marriage made in heaven.
As always, this song provides great snares and riffs. The fill and transitions are good and the baritone tune guitar lines are perfect. This is the perfect progression for them with their awesome sound together with Dustin’s voice. Only he could pen lyrics like "you were built for blessing, but only you make them bleed".
Thrice will be touring America in September and hopefully they shall be gracing the UK with their presence soon after that. 'Yellow Belly' is a great introduction to their new sound and if the rest of the album is as good as this, they will be producing their best album to date.
