Following the singles ‘Black & White’ and ‘Crash & Burn’, Scarlette Fever releases ‘Elated’ – a stripped back and piano-led ballad showing a softer side to the previous more guitar driven single choices.
Your classic ‘paint-by-numbers’ ballad of vocal and piano gently leading you to a rising string section and sliding guitar instrumental, is instantly heart-wrenching from the beginning hook. And I don’t mean ‘paint-by-numbers’ in a bad way; thinking where you’d like the next chord to fall and then for it to appear there makes this song all the more easy on the ears.
Produced by Julian Emery who has previously worked with Lissie, he still very much keeps Scarlette’s more ‘folk’ sound but sprinkles it with that classic radio-friendly pace which makes it a more mainstream sound than past singles. Thankfully the heartache yet relief of the song’s story is still believable in the country shade of Scarlette’s vocal.
A coming of age and of defiance in the ending of a relationship or situation makes it sound like pretty deep stuff, but it’s also refreshing to hear a song which isn’t the normal extremes of either deep love or bitterness.
As with most ballads, it’s not a happy one, but more the realisation that something you thought you had is no longer there. There aren’t always happy endings, dreams don’t always come true – but reality makes a damn fine topic for this, a charming and honest pop song.
