Former Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows releases new single ‘If I Had A Heart’ next month, following numerous other projects and a busy summer both with I Am Arrows and clocking up the air miles with We Are Scientists – of which he is now a full time member since 2009.
This single, under his own name, follows in a similar vein to the laid back acoustic strums of the I Am Arrows album, produced here again by Eliot James. A belated summer ditty perfectly suited to the turning autumnal conditions.
A class drummer, everyone has no doubt heard at least one of his drumming appearances with various bands; it’s no surprise he is sought after – working this year with Mark Ronson and currently writing and recording with Editors frontman Tom Smith sounds incredibly intriguing (check out ‘The Colour Of My Dreams’ from a few years ago to whet your appetite).
But if you’ve not heard the I Am Arrows stuff, then this single is also the opportunity to hear his genuinely enjoyable vocals. Unflustered and natural, it’s an instant likeability to him and the track which makes for a great pop song. And I don’t mean to tarnish it by using the ‘pop’ tag, I mean pop as in the good stuff.
A sprinkling of electric synth stabs and blasts add that extra layer and body to a track otherwise simply acoustic; it gives it an edge where the simplicity in production feels perfect in balance. Most obvious is the producer and artist have worked together before: a tried, tested and successful formula which complement each other effortlessly.
The lyrical content is clearly an apology, a realisation in hindsight of a failed relationship - it’s like an open letter to the ex. Very open, like in a song, people can download, hear at a gig. Better than a very sorry bunch of flowers from the garage really isn’t it?
A collective of collaborations in the pipeline, including writing new stuff with the ever-popular We Are Scientists, Andy’s got a lot to keep him busy. But with everything else going on you just hope this isn’t all we hear of the solo artist Andy Burrows; because based on this, it would be worth making some ‘me’ time for in a non-stop schedule of sharing your talent with others.
