New Found Glory - Radiosurgery (Single Review)

Of late, New Found Glory have been insisting “Pop-Punk’s Not Dead” anywhere they can. It’s a phrase that has appeared in stage banter, on every social network available and even on their merchandise. They’ve even named their recent tour after this slogan. And who can blame them? Infectious Pop-Punk has always been the trade of Florida veterans New Found Glory and if this single is an indication of the quintet’s future, we can safely assume that when they say “Pop-Punk’s Not Dead”, they mean it. With single Radiosurgery, they’re once again breathing life into the genre that they have quietly become the unchallenged kings of, and rightly so.

ImageThe song begins with a lone guitar recalling modern Green Day and as frontman Jordan Pundik opens with the words “I’ve broken down I’m a nervous wreck”, the word seem ironic because New Found Glory sound very much in control of themselves. There are no hints of instability in this band as perfectly layered guitars dance behind Pundik’s vocals and though those vocals are more a genre template than they are innovative, the song doesn’t suffer for it. With just the right amount of distorted bass guitar and a rare solo from Chad Gilbert, Radiosurgery hints that New Found Glory seem to be on a mission into the past. Guitarist Steve Klein told the Phoenix New Times’ Up On The Sun music blog that, "We wanted to go back to the roots of pop punk music. We wanted to bring that back with New Found Glory's style, but also as a throwback," and it seems they have done just that.

It has been said by many that the sign of a great song is its ability to stay in your head after the first time you hear it and if that is the case, then Radiosurgery is a brilliant effort from the Florida Pop-Punk legends and deserves your full attention. With a huge chorus full of summery harmonies and a gentle balance between the modern New Found Glory and themselves ten years ago, fans will feel hugely rewarded that a band it is impossible to dislike are still aiming straight for the hearts of listeners.
