Modestep have placed themselves firmly in the public eye with a succession of catchy singles in Feel Good and Bite The Hand, but with Sunlight the London four-piece have taken their credibility a step further.
There are those who would listen to Modestep’s gripping sound and brush it under the rug with a thousand other dubstep acts. However, the imposing bass, driving percussion and the vocals performed on Modestep tracks have something different to most dubstep acts – they are performed live everywhere the band play. This helps them put paid to those dismissive of electronic music as a whole.
Onto the song itself - Modestep have produced a very catchy track in Sunlight and, though it is vocally repetitive, a few well placed changes in musical atmosphere and a tempo change in the closing chapters help to make this a song that will still draw the listener’s anticipation on a second or third listen. Vocalist Josh Friend’s high vocals complement the calmer sections, adding an element of accessibility for the listener and inviting those who are probably not as familiar with the rawness dubstep possesses.
Though this gentle element can seem like a contrast, it fits perfectly with what is, in all, a very appealing track on many levels.
Sunlight is a song tailor-made to be played and replayed on dance floors around the world and due to their live set up, the Modestep boys will find themselves accepted into many genres, much like Pendulum did when they broke into the mainstream in 2005.
