Superstar soul singer Adele has managed to equal the number of weeks that the Titanic soundtrack stayed top of the US Billboard top 200 album chart, a feat also equalled by Billy Ray Cyrus, Whitney Houston and Garth Brooks.
Her album ‘21’ has become one of the biggest selling albums of the past couple of years, and has catapulted Adele into international fame. It has now reached its 16th consecutive week on top of the charts, and becomes just the 20th album ever to do so.
While 16 weeks at the top isn’t the highest record (the West Side Story sound track managed 54 weeks, while Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ got 37 weeks), it is a feat only equalled by Whitney Houston’s world famous ‘Bodyguard’ soundtrack, Bill Ray Cyrus’ ‘Some Gave it All’ and Garth Brooks’ ‘Ropin’ the Wind’. Adele’s record could still also improve, should it spend more consecutive weeks at the top.
Adele has recently spent time out of the live scene, after she underwent vocal cord surgery due to suffering from a benign polyp, but is now recovering – and has lined-up performances at both the Grammy Award ceremony and the BRIT Awards show. The Grammys will be held on February 12th in Los Angeles’ Staples Centre, and will be hosted by LL Cool J.
