The Levels – Listen (EP Review)

Tuesday, 20 March 2012 Written by Sophie Monk

The Levels, formerly known as Bright Lights by long term fans, have been on the local music scene, gigging around various Liverpool venues since 2010. Over the past two years they have had many successful gigs and have drastically increased their fan base.

What makes the Levels such a fun, easily loved band is their closeness with each other. Members Dodge, John and Rob (guitarist, drummer & guitarist) were first to set the band off gigging at places such as Zanzibar and the Picket. Later joined by friends Kim and Alex (singer & bassist) the band really started to get noticed.

After a gig at the Liverpool O2 academy in 2011, I overheard a number of people discussing how amazing the band was, and too right! The band have released their 6 song EP ‘Listen’ for download on Facebook, and have so far managed to get over 1K plays of their song ‘Otherside’ and well over 300 plays for each of their other songs.

‘Otherside’ is probably the current favourite amongst loyal fans of the band; reason most likely being that in this song, you can hear just about every amazing vocal and instrument sung and played to its absolute best. The beautifully unique vocals of singer Kim sung against the obviously talented guitarists, bassist and drummer, make for an infectious chorus. And I can’t not mention the astonishing guitar solo towards the end of the song, played by guitarist Rob.

‘Listen’ is slightly more mellow than the rest of the songs, and has by no doubt, got some of the best lyrics. All songs are written by the band; everyone contributing and putting their own experiences and feelings into each song is one of the many amazing things about this band.

Somewhere in the middle of the song the chorus leads into a very dramatic guitar part, which is built up to an explosive use of vocals and drumming. All of this, plus the very ‘Killers’ sounding ending to the song make one very memorable, catchy piece of music.

The band is set to perform their first gig outside of Liverpool later on this month at Manchester’s Dry Bar, and they couldn’t be more excited!

It’s pretty safe to say that the band have nothing to worry about when it comes to performance, because they always manage to sound their best and leave everyone with smiles on their faces and sore feet from jumping and really getting into the music!

Very best of luck to the band for their Manchester gig, and see you there!
