Band Of Horses - Mirage Rock (Album Review)

2010 marked the real emergence for Band of Horses with Grammy-nominated
album 'Infinite Arms'. Two years on, and the Seattle folk-rockers return with indifferent follow-up 'Mirage Rock'.

ImageSprightly opener ‘Knock Knock’ and ‘Feud’ certainly accentuate the bands rockier side. Whilst the former leans towards an unusually pop saturated exterior, a storming to and fro of chords dominates the latter.

Birdwell and co. then appear to pay homage to the hippie 60’s. 'Dumpster World', with its exposed wandering melody, dances around the scattered bones of 'a horse with no name' for the best part, before reaching a rather capricious deviation.

Further highlighting an unshakable penchant for soothing harmonies and alternative melodies, Birdwell and Ramsey’s intertwining vocals find themselves wrapped up in weary tale 'Slow Cruel Hands of Time' and homely acoustic melody, ‘Everything's Gonna Be Undone’. Meanwhile, as the handsomely ponderous 'How to Live' exudes a real country charm, an enchanting tranquility encompasses a deftly structured ‘Shut-in Tourist’.

Despite lacking the same verve as its predecessor, ‘Mirage Rock’ is still an album worthy of any collection.
