Kings Of Leon - Come Around Sundown (Album Review)

Kings of Leon have come a long way since the release of debut LP ‘Youth and Young Manhood’ back in 2003. Gone are the days of dodgy hair, barely audible vocals and frenzied guitars of which their brand of southern rock embodied. Of late, the Tennessee band has opted for a far more polished approach perhaps somewhat unintentionally, to appeal to a wider audience. New album ‘Come Around Sundown’ does exactly that.

The Nashville rockers may appear to be playing it safe here as there is a noticeable absence of anthems such as ‘Sex on Fire’ and ‘Use Somebody’. Still, after a few listens, this is a grower…

ImageAlbum opener 'The End' continues where previous album ‘Only By The Night’ left off. A prominent yet slow drumbeat and bass line create the perfect backdrop for Caleb’s distinguished voice to take centre stage. Thus far this tried and tested method offers nothing new.

First single of the new LP is 'Radioactive' and it’s fairly obvious why. It’s upbeat and includes an inviting chorus. Guitarist Matthew (Followill) offers tidy guitar playing, using delay and reverb effectively throughout. That’s possibly why at times the band draws comparisons with legends U2.

The album seems to have a slice of everything. 'Pyro' accentuates the bands mellower side but still manages to carry another great chorus including some noteworthy lyrics, for instance “I won’t ever be your cornerstone” and “Everything I cherish is slowly dying or it’s gone”. 'Mary' tips its hat forward and towards the direction of the blues whilst retaining a sterling old fashioned rock n roll appeal. Standout track 'Back Down South' maintains a real homely, country vibe complete with slide guitar, hand clapping and fiddles…all for good measure.

The majority of the album chugs along at a ponderous pace which is certainly a variance on previous releases. However, you will still find yourself bobbing your head along to many of the tracks...five quality albums in seven years remains impressive.
